It would be interesting to see how the behavior changes in the latest UDMA(2) devel. Jack just sent this to me, and I've made it available on ibiblio:

Jim -- After a long "holiday" delay, Bernd Blaauw has finally tested my latest drivers! Attached is the file UDMA2_20.ZIP containing V2.0 UDMA2/UDMA2S and V7.5 UDMA/UDMAJR. Go ahead and post it to the IBiblio "DEVEL" directory.

After much advice and testing by Bernd Blaauw (many thanks
Bernd!!), I am happy to release V2.0 UDMA2/UDMA2S and V7.5
UDMA/UDMAJR, with the following changes: A bug in running
the read-tests is fixed, a new /S switch enables the UDMA2
local-stack in "DMA only" mode for people who need it, and
(the BIG news!) a new /L switch in UDMA2 and UDMA2S allows
these drivers to run with the UMBPCI upper-memory driver!!
For more detail about /L and /S, see the V2.0 README file.
