Hi Eric,
Success!!!
FreeDOS is working faster then MS-DOS 7.10 (even if it has UDMA2)
I identified 2 issues:
1) DOS=UMB is slow (HIGH is only a little slow)
2) tunning lbacache is very important (as bellow)
I had an important machine crash and lost most of my day, and I just
made a few tests after midnight. Next week I will test better and find
out wht is happenning
BTW: what is TUNA and TUNW? (I used both)

Hi, that probably depends on factors like:
- do you use fat32?
- is your cache big enough to cache the fat tables?
(you can try lbacache temperature control tricks to lock the fat
data into the cache maybe, check the documentation for that...
just an idea, does not necessarily have to work)
- are the two files in big (many entries) directories?
- is the access write access to both files? does the tunw and/or tuna
option of lbacache help?
The above is just meant as inspiration. Too many factors involved to
do real tests, but you can do some testing to "poke around" in the
"problem space", maybe you find something which actually improves
speed in "user perceptible" way. Using fat16 with medium sized clusters
and not-too-big directories and not-too-big (maybe 8 MB) caches is
probably best.
Happy testing and good luck!
PS: Please try the following DR DOS nwcache delayed write caching
setup to get some comparison to the effects of "small delayed write
cache" (as opposed to "full delayed write cache" and "no delayed
write cache" for which you will easily find the command line options
to activate them ;-)). Note that lbacache does not offer any delayed
write cache.
