Hi Bernd, nice to get some info about your progress...
*provide translated interface for batchfile messages/menus (done)
I hope you use the in-line default message syntax, makes the batch
files much easier to read and maintain. Only OTHER languages than
English should read the messages from external message files...
Does this mean that there is a way to automaticaly translate .BAT files?
I am interested because I am making a FreeDOS distribution too, but
according to my tastes that are 1) different 2) to a much restricted
audience
*accelerate bootdisk by using ramdrives
Uhmmm... You use memdisk (ramdisk) anyway... Take care to stay
low-memory compatible (remember all the troubles with the SVGA
installer - it CAN run in text mode as well, but needs a 486dx or
similar CPU and 3-4 MB free RAM, eye-candy which really caused us
some compatibility headaches...)
*store only a minimum of temporary files on the installed distribution.
again, a ramdisk might be usefull.
Not sure if that is useful. Only installation on harddisk is supported
at the moment, and harddisks which are SO full that only FreeDOS itself
without any temp files will fit on them are unlikely. As long as you
get the choice to install without source codes, of course ;-).
I thing that as most machines are fast and have lots of ram (from a dos
point of view), it would be nice, yes, to have it optimized. Maybe with
a test for compatibility reasons.
*create a diskette that can boot both FreeDOS and MSDOS (done)
Not really important imho...
It is important imho. I alredy tryed to make one, maybe a little
different: I Wanted to have a machine boot normaly with MS-DOS/Win9x,
AND booting with a floppy would run FreeDOS. I just had a directory like
C:\FDOS and the config file can set things in a way that the floppy is
no longer needed.
Why I believe this is important? It is the best way to TEST FreeDOS
without changing the users OS. IMHO this is eve better than uninstalling
FreeDOS because it is 100% safe.
PS: How about adding NLSFUNC and the updated DISPLAY / MODE (not yet public)?
I am using the new COUNTRY/DISPLAY/MODE combination. it works just fine.
Nlsfunc i not as needed because basic configurations can be made with
MODE. I just don't know about german and russian that may change
keyboard during operation, but latin and english people don't do it ;-)
