I've already downloaded the FreeDOS LiveCD/Bootable CD, made changes to
the ISO and had it load and play the game (it's not MAME- like I said,
something like KnoppixMAME or AdvanceMAME, where it boots directly to
the game), but I just have to remove the menus first. So, I'll try
doing the changes to the floppy image (as suggested). Really, the only
thing I need to change is that menu :)
I've already been able to change the IsoLinux menu, that was suprisingly
simple.
Thanks for all the help guys. I'll let you know how it goes. Really
fast community here. If I get it running like I want, I'll post the
ISO. I'm using the free game Fenix Blade (http://fenixblade.com)
written by my friend Sirocco as a preliminary test. But the final CD
will have a game that I wrote on it.
if you insist :)
Paul, you're using a cdrom for MAME. CDroms use no-emulation, floppy
emulation (read-only) or harddisk emulation (read-only) traditionally.
There's no way to access the bulk of the cdrom directly, other than
using a virtual floppy/harddisk (disk image) and then loading cdrom
driver components.
For FreeDOS, Jeremy Davis came up with Isolinux, and we've stuck to that.
Download the FreeDOS ISO, unpack it so directories appear (FreeDOS,
ISOLINUX).
You may throw away the FreeDOS directory, so you only end up with the
ISOLINUX directory.
Then, replace the virtual floppy I'm using (\ISOLINUX\DATA\FDBOOT.IMG)
by your own.
Same filename, any regular diskette size allowed.
in config.sys, load a cdromdriver (and XMS driver if you prefer).
VIDE-CDD.SYS is prefered (search the web for it )
in autoexec.bat, load SHSUCDX, Jason Hood's replacement driver for
MSCDEX, and assign a driveletter.
config.sys:
device=himem.exe
device=vide-cdd.sys /D:FDCD0001
autoexec.bat:
@echo off
shsucdx /D:FDCD0001,X
X:
CD \
ECHO Running from cdrom now!
If you find the Isolinux menu timeout annoying, change
isolinux\isolinux.cfg :)
hope this helps, I'm not familiar with MAME and even after downloading
it, I won't end up with it working due to lack of ROMs.
Modifying my FreeDOS batchfiles is also possible, but quite difficult :)
