Hi Tom, you are probably right with your pessimism about FreeCOM source maintainability, but I disagree about abc:
> a) remove all components that don't work like > DEFRAG's that don't do anything It works for me as far as I remember. Note that the progress bar is not updated in some modes. Maybe you confuse it with our old SCANDISK where the engine hangs at an early step... > DEFRAG's that thrash FAT32 because they don't understand FAT32 For me, DEFRAG aborts before trashing anything when it attempts to mess with a FAT32 partition. Should be easy to make it refuse FAT32 defrag in the first place, though. Pity that Imre is completely vanished since 1-1.5 years ago (not only from FreeDOS, it seems?)... > b) decide which chkdsk to use; providing 2,3 or more is as > unuserfrienly as possible... CHKDSK is the clone-MS one. DOSFSCK is 386+ only, but can do FAT32. And it allows interactive repair method selection. So DOSFSCK is actually exactly the right ENGINE for some SCANDISK tool with fancy user engine, while CHKDSK is the right CHKDSK. > c) make it a DOS distribution ( ~1-2 MB), not a pile of each and > every more or less useful or useless programm... For that we have ODIN (1 or 2 disks, maybe plus a third disk with full documentation) and FreeDOS beta 9 (a few MB). However, it is GOOD that we have Blair's distro (100 MB ISO) for those who want a lot of DOS: Actually such people had to use beta 8 until Blair started his distro, and beta 8 is really outdated. Those who want a MINIMAL DOS should of course go for Jeremies fdos.org disk images :-).
