So you were thinking everyone was talking about a "shim"? I agree that would be the best approach, as it could then be used for all kinds of devices, not just USB. I think we're going to see a lot of non-USB devices with non-512 sector sizes in the future. We're probably also going to see a lot of disks (though probably not USB flash drives) with more than 4G sectors, meaning 48/64-bit LBA, but that's another issue. I think the FreeDOS kernel will support 4k sectors pretty soon, possibly even before Bertho will finish his program. MS & IBM DOS already will support them with a simple kernel patch (at least supposedly -- never actually tested, at least by me).
