Probably a bad example on my part, esp. since my 486 was an Sx/25 (no FPU).
Also, I've never been impressed with compilers for that kind of machine.
Anyways, I didn't mean faster than .ZIP. The whole point of .ZIP is that
it's brutally fast and extremely low RAM. It's one of the best for 16-bit
machines. 7-zip has its own better (but slower) Deflate compressor, though,
if that's what you meant.
Anyways, for what it does, 7-zip can be very low RAM and very fast
unpacking. The advantage is solid archiving (across multiple files) and not
being restricted to a 32k dictionary (which is very very very small). And
you can choose what dictionary size to use when compressing, so it's never
a problem.
The compression ratio is almost always quite noticeably better than .ZIP,
.GZ, .BZ2, and similar. Considering the fast decompression and relatively
low RAM, it's definitely a winner, IMHO. But I guess YMMV. :-)
