It's not possible to "revive" the BIOS after the machine has booted. The BIOS
(and DOS) doesn't work that way.

There's no way to fix that, at least not directly. Some BIOSes do support
"plug and play" in a limited way. That is, after booting, they will allow you
to plug and unplug the USB drive from the slot, and some BIOSes may even allow
you to insert different USB drives into the slot. But, you still must have a
USB drive plugged in when you're booting or DOS won't assign usable drive
letter(s). And, not all BIOSes support even this minimal level of "plug and
play".

Which DOS USB Driver is that? I suspect that you're not actually using it,
since it crashes?

As you stated above, though, this only works when you have the USB drive
plugged in while booting. So, you do actually need drivers to have it work
like you want it to.

You can try my USB drivers (available at http://bretjohnson.us), which do
support plug-and-play like you're wanting. AFAIK, my drivers are the only ones
that do. However, the current version of the drivers only work with a limited
subset of USB hardware (UHCI USB host controllers, which are manufactured by
Intel and Via). Since your computer is new, it may not have the right kind of
hardware. I'm working on an updated version of the drivers, but I have very
little time to devote so it's a slow process.
