Well, I messed around a little bit with the config. It appears, all "current issues” are caused by the UIDE.SYS driver. If UDVD2.SYS is used, the problems go away. So, my best guess is that there is a bug in that driver, resulting in CD-ROM read errors. It might be worth while to verify that CD read errors are handled by the unzip code. But, I think the issue is strictly in the driver. After all, virtual CD drives don’t have read errors.
