The thing I would do to speak against it is that because none of the other DOS versions, including older versions of FreeDOS, will be able to use it. I do know different versions of DOS do the ordering of the drive letters differently.
I think the best thing to do is try to automate it as much as you can by comparing data from things like the DPB, but even that is not always going to be 100% successful.
