I'm far from an expert in the subject, but I'm in the middle of reading
Programming Boot Sector Games, by Oscar Toledo.
In this book, Mr. Toledo explains on page 49 about CS XLAT (no mention
about AL in the code, but the text makes it clear it uses AL) precisely
what you mention in your first email, but says it works with the 8088.
This information can be trusted, IMHO, since he later uses PUSHA and POPA
and makes it clear that it will require a 80186.

Hope this helps. Sadly, I only have access to 486s and up.
