In this context I encountered an unexpected behaviour of probably
himemx:

Windows 3.11 outputs the following message when started in standard
mode the SECOND time. No problem when Win is started the first time:

> Cannot start Windows in standard mode. Make sure you have installed
HIMEM.SYS...

This does not occur with XMGR and also not with the HIMEM provided by
Windows 3.11.
