Even if the functionality is almost the same, use case is totally different. XDEL with overwriting is intended to reinforce security, making more difficult to recover deleted content. As opposite ZEROFILL writes zeros on the free space, making it easier to compact the volume (and also reinforce the security if trying to recover deleted files).
