Hi,
I almost forgot about it:

At https://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/util/unix/tar/ you can find two versions of tar:
tar 1.12 and
tar 321
While working on other problems in FDT I noticed that the only tar used on the computer is:
tar.exe 3.21 delta from Tim V. Shaporev (tar.exe size: 56,789 Byte)

whereas fdimples says that it installs on the computer:
tar (GNU TAR) 1.12 a from Kai Uwe Rommel (it doesn't) (gnu tar exe size. 167,936 Byte)

As it seems even the packet itself that you can download from
https://fd.lod.bz/repos/latest/html/de/archiver/tar/20250320.0/index.html
seems to include this mismatch. It reports 1.12 in TAR.LSM - but tar.c in the same packet says:
tar.c - Tape ARchive utility program (main function)
 * Author: T.V.Shaporev
 * Creation date: 14 Dec 1990

So there seems to be a mismatch. Could someone please check and if necessary fix this?

My question: Which one should really be in use at FDT2506 or later?

Willi
