Without knowing the details, we should try to avoid such a scenario under all 
circumstances for an officially released kernel.

Well, that's a little bit frightening :)

So how can we make sure that the kernel is properly tested? Adding it as an 
additional package to the interim builds and ask people to install and test it 
(or even ask at installation)? Ask specific people (or everyone via the 
website) to download it from somewhere and test it? I am afraid the number of 
testers might be pretty low. The probability that bugs slip through to a 
"stable" release will then be high. I am really not sure what the best approach 
is.

Semi-offtopic: Do we have statistics on how often the interim releases are 
downloaded at all? If not, we should start gathering that information, as this 
helps us estimate how many people are running (and testing) the "new stuff".
