Now the kernel no longer removes or renames the current directory of the drive for which this is requested.
This says that it does not do what is requested... Could you please rewrite or explain it?
MS-DOS never removes or renames the current directory of the drive for which this is requested but always fails with "attempted to remove current directory" error instead. Now FreeDOS does the same
