well to put in my 2cents,

I am running Xandros and it is quite a bit better than Corel's effort although as I understand some of the development staff is the same.

Word Perfect for Linux was actually their windows version with wine. I tried it and it was quite buggy.

Openoffice is the opensource version of StarOffice and if you like office suites its pretty good (I don't like office suites).

I have had the experince of trying many linux distros and must say that each one has its quirks and good points.

If you plan to stick with linux for the long run and won't jump ship if things require a little fiddling under the hood, I wouldn't say that you must start with Xandros, actually a debian based system is nice, but I really enjoyed mandrake and Fedora.

I would even reccomend going to distro watch and reading the reviews there.

I like Xandros, but in a way it is not really Linux but a hybred between windows and linux. They have manipulated the OS for windows people and it is impressive but hides a bit of the Linux experince from you.
