in case of Win9x, MetaKern can be useful.
In your case, adding a line to BOOT.INI was all that's needed (if you have a

udma.sys not loaded - bad EBDA bios setting
if you're loading NIOS, try the Netware bootdisk from http://www.veder.com/nwdsk/
