keep things as simple as possible.
First, it matter if you have NT/2000/XP/2003 or MSDOS/Win9x.
in case of Win9x, MetaKern can be useful.
In your case, adding a line to BOOT.INI was all that's needed (if you have a
bootsectorfile):
C:\BOOTSECT.BIN="FreeDOS beta9 release candidate 5"

device=c:\fdos\bin\himem.exe
device=c:\fdos\bin\emm386.exe X=TEST
DOS=HIGH,UMB
switches=/E
shell=c:\command.com /P:c:\fdos\bin\fdauto.bat

get latest versions of HIMEM and EMM386 from:
http://fdos.org/ripcord/beta9-final/addon/odin7bin.zip
(write the diskette image to diskette, then you can access the files).

BTW bugreport:
platform - laptop SIS630 chipset, FD B9rc5
EMM386.exe crashes,
udma.sys not loaded - bad EBDA bios setting

if you're loading NIOS, try the Netware bootdisk from http://www.veder.com/nwdsk/ recommend to use Bugzilla [ http://www.freedos.org/bugs/bugzilla/ ] for reporting bugs.
