you just re-discovered major FreeCOM bug 1704:

First noticed in September 2003, but it looks as if it has
never felt serious enough to fix :-(

Topic: You can overwrite a file by a non-existing file,
the dest file is destroyed before existence of source file
is verified.

Well, maybe it even DID get fixed, but only in a so-called
TESTING version of FreeCOM which did not yet get the name
FreeCOM 0.82pl4? Did anybody try the latest TESTING yet?
