Here is my question -- I am using microsoft utilities
from the win98 emergency disk to make a ram drive and
set it in the path. Is there a non-ms way to do it,
e.g., something that works with tdsk?

Use XMSDSK, it's freeware
http://www.simtel.net/product.php?url_fb_product_page=4825

I wonder if the EMS version runs on FreeDOS.
it also generates an errorlevel, where 1=A up to 26=Z,
(or was it 0..25) so you can find the driveletter in batchfile, or, easier,
hardcode it.

xmsdsk.exe 10000 R: /t /y
