More on the XCOPY problem. The version installed by the current bootable CD
distro is XCOPY v1.2, and I cannot get that to do anything. For example:
XCOPY D:\WANTED C:\WANTED
will generate the error message: "Invalid destination drive specification."
It does not help if you first create the directory C:\WANTED.
In fact, anything I tried generated the same error message.
So I went looking for an update.
http://freedos.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/freedos-lsm.cgi?q=d&a=base lists
information on all the compiled binaries of the individual FreeDOS programs.
It may not be up to date, and sometimes does not link you to the best place
to download the most current version of a program, but it is the best place
to go if you don't have better information.
For XCOPY, this page tells you that the most recent version is v.2, and it
links you to
http://freedos.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/freedos-lsm.cgi?q=f&a=base/xcopy-rxcopy.lsm,
which in turn links you to
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/xcopy/rxcopy/ as
the primary site for downloads.
At the downloads page, you will see at the bottom of the list the two most
recent downloads:
rxcopy13.zip 11-Sep-2005 16:25 51k
rxcopy2.zip 18-Aug-2005 15:03 67k
But if you download and unzip rxcopy2.zip (presumably v.2, but which, though
larger, is shown as being created BEFORE rxcopy13.zip), internal help (xcopy
/?) identifies it as v1.2, probably the same version included with the CD
distro.
If you download and unzip rxcopy13.zip, it identifies itself as v1.3, and it
actually works!

By the way, can anyone tell me if there is a way of posting to the email
list so that the new post shows up as part of a thread?
