This was just an error on my side. With: smbclnt.exe \\server\share -U Username Password it works. A "smbclnt -L \\server" shows the shares in a similar way to the "net view" command in MS Client. Files with special characters (äöüß) are not displayed correctly and can not be accessed. This is a difference to another binary smbclient.exe which I found as part of the ReactOS project http://download.samba-tng.org/tng/snapshot/win32/ and which seems to work in a similar way (behaviour, error message of missing "smb.conf") but only in a DOS window in Windows.
