Until now I wasn't aware of the PocketDOS project, pretty interesting
and appreciated as it brings more users to FreeDOS and perhaps a
comeback (ok, pretty unlikely).

Did you try asking their support forums?

I am using ndn, it's good, there is a DPMI32 DOS release. Dunno if it
scales also well on low resources.
