I use dosemu; been using it for > 15 years. Although I still use DOS (freedos+4dos) on a network in my office (wordstar, foxpro). I needed a method of determining which OS I am running also. I set a variable in the dosemu autoexec, then I test it, using a routine in dosemu that allows you to run unix commands. This came up when I tried to exit DOS using the dosemu exit program and it crashed.
