The FreeDOS serial communications is now working on my modern PCs. The serial
port was expecting DTR and RTS signals to be asserted. Once they were
asserted, it worked.
Thanks to all who responded!

Subject: RE: [Freedos-user] Difficulty with serial communications
Ralf,
Anyway, I checked my FreeDOS stuff this weekend and my diagnostic tool is
unfortunately not among the stuff I was able to restore previously. I do know
that I have another computer where this is on, but that is in my storage and as
I am in the middle of moving (again), I can't get that one out for now.
I do however have various pieces of source code from which I can whip up
another test program. Will do so when I get back home later today/tonight.
If you could put the source(s) onto a github site or similar that I could then
download and compile, that may be the best way for me to get permission to try
it here at work. - Tim
The basic issue is that this is less of a problem of (Free)DOS, but what
exactly the hardware/BIOS is providing and initializing in regards to the
serial ports.
Yes, your first reply suggested that. I have since started reading the UEFI
spec ( http://www.uefi.org/sites/default/files/resources/UEFI%20Spec%202_6.pdf
). I hope to understand how to access the serial port in UEFI legacy mode both
with and without FreeDOS loaded as UEFI’s runtime functions are different than
its bootload functions. That may help explain why my serial communications
efforts in FreeDOS presently fail. -Tim
