Interesting. I run FreeDOS, in QEMU on Linux. The "Linux" part doesn't matter, QEMU should be the same on any platform - they also support MacOS and Windows <https://www.qemu.org/download/>.
With all defaults in FreeDOS 1.3 RC3, I have 628k as the largest executable program size.
