My thoughts: I run FreeDOS in a virtual machine. That's probably the easiest way for most people to run FreeDOS today. (Obviously everyone is different, especially for those who prefer to run on actual hardware - but I'm talking about "most people" here.) I use QEMU and VirtualBox to boot FreeDOS. I find I get better performance in VirtualBox for some things, and better performance in QEMU for some other things. I think QEMU provides better hardware emulation - for example, VirtualBox doesn't emulate the PC speaker, while QEMU does.
