Remember that Jeremy first posted in 2021-07-26 about his proof
of concept demo of a Windows 386enh install on FreeDOS kernel.
Kernel version 2044 exists since 2023-12-02.
Since then, we basically have been waiting for people to TEST
the improved kernel, while Jeremy, Tom and ECM and others have
worked on yet more news. For up to date kernel versions, go to:
https://github.com/FDOS/kernel
(alas, the link to precompiled kernel.fdos.org needs updating)

I've been maintaining an automatic build of the (gcc ia16 built) kernel on our
server [1] along with the corresponding FreeDOS SHARE [2] and FreeCOM [3].
Older revisions of these are in the old/ subdirectories [4].

I took a quick look at the fdkernel.zip and freedom.zip files and have a couple
questions.

At present, the Release and Interim Builds are providing 2 versions of the
Kernel. One for 8086 and one for 80386+. Both versions include FAT32 support. I
only see one kernel.sys file. Which CPU does it support and does it include
FAT32 support?

It's an 8086 FAT32 build.

Is it possible have it automatically build one for both CPUs and include FAT32
support in both versions?

I would have to look into that.

Also, what is that KGC8632.sys file?

This is what the kernel build file is named internally. GC = gcc, 86 = 8086 compatible, 32 = FAT32 support.

As for FreeCOM, I assume the “shell/command.exe” is the basic executable
without any translations tacked onto the end. A simple “copy command.exe +
something command.com” would be yield the different versions required.

The COPY command may need a /B switch. And I'm not sure about shell/command.exe, I just always use the default (english?) version in the file /command.com (in the root of the zipfile).

Regards,
ecm
