If USBDRIVE works great to copy files then that suggests one possible
workaround: I've seen some printers that can read and print PDF files
from a USB drive.  I can also take a USB drive with me and print from
a public computer in the library.  Another potential workaround would
be an Ethernet print server.  For example, here's one for $25 on ebay
that ought to work with LPR.EXE.
