I did the same thing for the lemmings game that was so popular in the early 
90s.  It only ran on a floppy drive, and after a few executions, it would pop 
up with the shareware registration screen, and wouldn't let you play again 
until you quit and restarted it again.  I found the difference in the ini file, 
and at first, I'd edit it in the ini file, then I got smart, and just copied a 
clean ini over the one already there.  It worked, never got the popup screen 
again.  Of course, the only time it got used was when a friend wanted to play 
the game, since I couldn't use it myself, and he only showed up like once a 
week at most.  My copy of the lemmings game came with my soundblaster card, and 
I figured I'd paied enough for the card, I didn't want to pay for a game I 
couldn't play too.
