BRING BACK THE BIOS! (TO UEFI SYSTEMS, THAT IS)
May 29, 2025 by Jenny List

I dabbled in Linux BIOS (AKA Coreboot) a long time ago and this
low-level or BIOS programming can be very tricky due to lack of
debugging interfaces.

Typically, you're likely going to desire using serial (eg. db5
port/cable) to another computer for receiving debugging messages via
terminal, as the computer will likely have little display while booting.

Another item, is a PCI BIOS post code card, in the event a hang, you'll
know where the hang-up is possibly.

Once figured-out the hang or hurdle, usually is quite stable and
extremely quick.

A wrapper for EFI/UEFI booting DOS/FreeDOS should be rather the easiest
and less code method for booting DOS/FreeDOS rather than a mass of code
for running Qemu. Granted, the later is already written.

Given time, I may spend some time on this.

Does this UEFI loader perform an exitfrombootservices() to UEFI firmware once the firmware is loaded ?

Just wonder how SeaBIOS provides support to the underlying hardware with the UEFI boot services. Does anybody know ?

Thanks,

Roderick Klein
