All current translations for the FreeDOS packages which use the NLSPATH
environment variable are maintained in the FD-NLS[1] project at present. You
can also view the current state of translations and supported programs on a
GitHub[2] web page for that project.
The current workflow for adding or update translations is as follows:
- Modify and test the translations locally on you computer in the
%NLSPATH% directory.
- Submit a pull request with your improvements to the FD-NLS project.
—— then ——
- Once approved and accepted, they will get merged into the FD-NLS
project.
- Then, the new translations will get merged into the appropriate
package(s) on GitLab[3] into an unstable branch for those projects.
- The new translations will be available on the follow FreeDOS Monthly
Interim Build of the OS Release Media.
- The new translations will eventually be included in the Latest
FreeDOS Download and Update Repository[4].
- If all is well with the translations, they will be included in the
master/main branch for the related project.
- Eventually they will be on the next OS Release of FreeDOS (like 1.5
or 2.0).
For most new contributors of translations, the hardest part is working with
GitHub. It can be very confusing for those without experience using it.
Actually sometimes, it can be confusing to those which have been using it for
decades. But, there are numerous desktop applications which can make it easier
to interact with a git server.
At this time, submitted translations to FD-NLS should include both a codepage
encoded and UTF-8 encoded translations. Codepage versions are what is needed by
nearly all of the DOS programs using the NLSPATH files. The UTF-8 versions are
primarily to make editing a little easier on modern editors. Those also help
prevent and/or detect when an editor mangles the codepage version of the
translation.
Furthermore, please note that some programs use embedded source code for
translations. While we do have some of those on FD-NLS, we do not recompile the
programs to update their translations. Instead, we try to let the developer of
those programs know that we have updated translations available for them to
incorporate. Wether they do so or not is entirely up to them.
