Until now we haven't found what is causing this. Our "solution" is
then
to restart httpd.
Is there something we can change in our settings to avoid it?

In that thread the suspicion was logrotate and/or a reload of httpd.
Logrotate might be the trigger. We always see it happening (if it happens)
on Sundays at midmight

As far as I know we have not changed anything in the logrotate setup.
I'm surprised that there aren't many more users that see this problem.
