Off the top of my head, I don't know for sure on Solaris. Based on other experiences, I've used the --target option and --build option before. At the core, configure is making 32bit b/c it's finding 32bit stuff (e.g. libs, compilers, etc.). Incorrect paths could be another possible issue.
