Hi,
I agree that getting 0.9.0 finished is the most important goal. I'll try
to help out new people, where I can, but right now, I'm working on
testing and finding ways to speed up testing. I think we should tell new
people that they are certainly free to download the latest source and
work on their own projects. We can evaluate them for inclusion in the
next release, and in the meantime, they'll have them for their own
private use. (We might get better tested stuff that way, too.) But, what
we most need, is help testing. I think testing helps people learn the
application. If they'll work on testing first, they'll be much more
knowledgeable about the application and, hopefully, less likely to
introduce new bugs when they start programming.
I'd like to have a new forum set up, one dedicated to testing. I'm also
going to set up a page on the Wiki about bug reporting and testing and
how anyone who wants can get involved in the test effort.
If we are going to go to more frequent beta releases, we have to be very
sure that we test everything we do as thoroughly as possible so we don't
introduce bugs that make us look inept and frighten the user base.
Getting the community involved actually means we have to be more
diligent than ever about making sure changes don't break existing
functionality.

Honestly, I think it was a choice between ruining the project because of
getting key developers distracted from the release (which is very bad)
and pissing off a new member of the community (obviously bad, too, but
perhaps not as bad as delaying 0.9.0 for another month or so). We gave
rational arguments, or at least tried very hard, and they apparently
were not convincing enough.
I see Yelve's action as a kind of "emotional blackmail" - "design the
feature NOW or I'll leave the list and make you feel guilty", and it
seemed to look like that from start. Which means that the problem is
more related to his lack of tolerance for having to wait a couple of
weeks. You'd have to change a lot to make such a person feel comfortable
with the project.
Some people are incompatible with some projects, and there's little one
can do about it.
On the other hand, it would be nice if there was a dedicated person with
lots of time to spend helping people who want to work on the project.
But is it possible at the moment, without delaying the release? I think
it isn't, because everyone with enough knowledge is fixing bugs at the
moment.
Maybe after 0.9.0?
