Guys,

I'm sorry I couldn't respond to things faster. My wife is in the hospital. They found a blood clot in her leg, which is very dangerous. So, I'm a bit stressed.

So....

Take a deep breath.

This project is important to all of us, but it's also only one aspect of our lives. There are many other important things going on for each of us, some that bring joy, and other sadness. We don't know each other well enough to be aware of these other things. Now, add in the fact that most of the people are writing in English, rather than their native language, and it's easy to understand how easy it is to misinterpret statements. But, when it comes right down to it, we're all here to do something we enjoy and to try to create something useful for anyone who cares to use it. That's a pretty cool thing, if you ask me. (It also helps a great deal that it's fun.)

Dan, I don't think any of us have the right to insist you remain project director if you no longer wish to fill that role. I would like to suggest, though, that it might be better for the project, if we had a more gradual transfer of authority. That way, whoever is going to be the new director has a chance to learn the role without losing the guidance of your experience.

That said, a "director in training" has to be willing to work with you and accept your guidance as a mentor. The director in training, has to be willing to accept decisions that may seem arbitrary and frustrating. That doesn't mean he can't question those decisions, but those kinds of questions should be done privately, not in front of the whole project.

Mistakes are going to be made. There will be mistakes in communication. People will say and do things they later regret. Mistakes are how we learn the most important lessons.

There is an interesting story told about Von Braun, the German rocket scientist who built the V2 rockets that terrorized London and later helped launch the U.S. space program. He was under great pressure to develop the rocket quickly. At one point, his bosses came to him and said, "You have made 50,000 changes to the design of this rocket! You are stalling!" He replied, "No, that is progress! I am 50,000 mistakes closer to success. The Americans have only made 30,000 mistakes and the Russians have only made 20,000 mistakes, so I am ahead by at least 10,000 mistakes!"

I don't know if any of these comments help. I am pretty distracted by my wife's illness. Please, just try to step back and realize this is only one part of your life and it try to remember we're all trying to do the same thing.

Sincerely,
 Ray

BTW: I'm the official cheerleader :)

Dear Chris, Eric, and Dimitry,

in a private email, I have asked Chris whether he could release me from my promise to be the director until the release of 0.9.0. He accepted.

I have already asked the whole team in the past, and from what I remember, both Dimitry and Eric have agreed to release me from my promise.

Chris, Eric and Dimitry, can you all please here publicly confirm that you are releasing me from my promise to be the project director until 0.9.0?

That would be very kind of you.

Best regards,
Dan
