It isn't the LGPL that presents a problem here; as you say it can be linked
with anything if you follow the rules.

It is the GPL that presents the problem, and I misspoke slightly.  I'm not
sure where GPL code can be *linked* with LGPL code (I suspect there may be
"issues" but I'll shut up on that part until I study it more).  

What is a bigger problem is that LGPL project can't *incorporate* GPL code
from other projects, while a GPL project can (a GPL project can also
incorporate code from LGPL projects).  That's not fatal, but given that I
don't see a real benefit to LGPL here, it seems unnecessary to isolate the
project from being able to incorporate GPL code from other projects if it is
or becomes useful to do so.
