I watched "X-Men" (a really bad movie) with avifile, and it didn't desync.
XMMS uses an obsolete version of avifile. You want the newer ones at
http://divx.euro.ru/. You need a recent version of Qt to build it.
The real smpeg distribution (www.lokigames.com/development/smpeg.php3)
includes a very cool application named "glmovie" that uses OpenGL to
render the movie fullscreen. Actually, I discovered that because the other
application, "plaympeg", started to segfault on launch when I tweaked my
system the wrong way.
