Well, I think that devoting a little time to re-writing the Freenet
specification would probably help out a lot with getting other
implementations going. I completely agree about Whiterose, too,
although I think people put maybe a little too much faith in native
code as a solution to perceived performance problems.
I think many of us are torn between seeing wide deployment of Freenet
(the network), which is really needed to get the wealth of information
we want from Freenet, and putting more and better features into
Fred. I think the two track approach, which -has- worked before, is
going to be a good thing.
Some of my Freenet-related resolutions for next year:
* Publish an Open Content article aimed at Web developers and
Webzinesters about how to publish a site in Freenet. This
would be kind of an expansion on the freenetproject.org page
about it, plus some Pigdoggety goodness, of course. B-)
* Work on EOF (http://sourceforge.net/projects/eof/) to really
get some interesting applications using Freenet as the
underlying system. I think there's some incredible potential
in the realm of anonymous communications and especially in
client-side browser apps.
* Try to get a way to do better bug-tracking that helps people
get their input in without stepping on current development
practice.
Lastly, gotta say to you, the "original academic crew," and other
folks who've been involved, thank you for Freenet! It's been great fun
so far, and I really think it's going strong.
Beaujolais to you! You're heroes of Information Freedom.
