Or get an ISA serial port card for 15$ or less, and a real serial external modem
for that. You can also use that with a portable computer you make take on travel
next summer, and other occasions, or use the other serial ports on it (there's
usually two or four on such a card) to connect such toys as a two-way radio modem
for no-cost connectivity if you're a licensed radio amateur, or you could connect
some GPS or weather data measuring system or other stuff to these.
There's also USB modems, but I'm not sure how well those are supported anywhere
outside M$ Windows yet. But since people who use only that may want to upgrade to
such, you have chances of finding used or new external serial modems at lower cost
in the classified ads in your local paper.
Oh heck, since you mention PC-Card, i.e. you seem to be using a laptop: it probably
has serail ports already, and you can also get a converter that supplies an extra
serial port via a USB port you may have.

Shouldn't it be possible to hang a proxy box between serial port and modem to
re-engineer their protocol? AOL may have all the bad reputation for the amateur
users, but they're also one out of only two low-cost flatrates in Germany ..
