You are right , installing gdbm from port fixed it..
Anyways, what does it take to add another checkitem to freeradius
Total-Time-Limit : Integer
Once set, the user can't login after certain number of secs.

Did you look at the messages produced during the compilation?
rlm_counter requires the GNU database libraries. If you don't have
those, rlm_counter won't build.
