Any number of reasons, which should be logged somewhere. Hmm... nope. The code doesn't check for errors, and doesn't log error messages. Do a 'cvs update', rebuild statically, and run the server in debugging mode. It shouldn't core dump any more, and it should print out an error message saying what went wrong.
