Why is shortname required (clients.conf)?

Quick question.. I only bring this up now that clients files is being dropped from usage it appears on later releases.. I've migrated everything over to clients.conf; however, it is now required that shortname=<witty nas name here> be included. Before I left all shortnames out as to simply log the IP address to radius.log which was preferred. Naturally I tried this with clients.conf and radiusd vomits when they aren't in there.

Is there a particular reason that shortname= is required for clients.conf? Any reason it couldn't be another optional line?
