For simple Auth reqirements try using the fast_users method...I 
found that this method is significently faster then just "users" or 
MYSQL for auth of 2,500,000 + user accounts. I also found 
that Postgres is faster than MYSQL, and can be trimed to be as 
fast, maybe faster than fast_users. Also be sure to have >256M 
Ram and if UNIX, tune your kernel's cache, memory and 
forking structures.
