..and, in case this guy is FreeBSD newbie

edit /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile

(to include the correct freebsd mirror for your location....and perhaps
the T1 option

then run 

cvsup ports-supfile


to update your /usr/ports descriptions

of course, you might need cvsup in the first place....but thats in 
/usr/ports/  - a XWindows and command line version no less!
