Hi FreeRDP developers,
So far, the license change has been smooth. I was worried at one point that
we wouldn't be able to reach Matthew Chapman to ask him permission, but we
managed to :P Someone on rdesktop-devel brought the attention towards our
license change yesterday, so we need to take the time now to clarify things.
I intended to do it before releasing 0.9, but this "unofficial" announcement
forces us to do it more quickly. It's not like we weren't prepared to go all
the way through anyway.
I started a new page on the wiki to provide information regarding the
license change:
http://www.freerdp.com/wiki/doku.php?id=license_change
It has been proposed on rdesktop-devel that we contact the Software Freedom
Law Center for advice regarding the matter. I will get in touch with them
soon and ask them to review our case. Ideally, we would have an external
entity review our code bases to identify potential copyright violations,
such that we can move forward and still sleep well at night. It has been
said many times: names in file headers do not accurately represent all
copyright holders. Some time will need to be put into reviewing the FreeRDP
code base to find unnamed code segments from people that should be asked for
their permission as well.
I would expect code bits here and there to be found, but nothing so big that
it would make us reconsider the license change. I am looking more into
getting assurance that we can safely move forward, so that we don't end up
in a legal fight somewhere in the future.
