I'm not sure, but I've met the similar problem once (but I don't remember what is the version of Windows it was). When I started to play some sound track in Windows Media Player, I could hear first two seconds and then silence. But WMP showed that it is still playing. As it turned out, for some unknown reason Windows changed volume level to mute after starting of playback.
