I have made some changes to the keyboard handling in the master branch 
some time ago, so it has my interest to make sure that it didn't cause 
any regressions.

Is xkb really needed for you? I would expect that default 
keyboard/scancode maps worked just fine in that case, both in 0.8.x and 
in the master branch. But at the same time I must admit that I haven't 
seen any cases where they were usable.
