I got it fixed. it turns out it was a really stupid mistake... when I introduced the "--gdi" option to choose between hardware and software GDI rendering, I left the default option as hardware. This was meant to enable an easy switch for developers to turn on hardware rendering and implement the currently missing hardware rendering. Since this unimplemented rendering was now chosen by default, it crashed. When I added the option, I tested using the option and explicitly choosing software rendering, which is why I didn't notice before. It's fixed on my github fork now, sorry about that.
