From what I can tell, you can clobber %rbx all you like since it is
not used in x86-64 PIC code.

For example, GCC's cpuid.h basically uses the following test:

#if defined(__i386__) && defined(__PIC__)
// save/restore off %ebx
#else
// clobber it
#endif
